No Hungarian On Rosetta Stone: 2 Super Alternatives

April 28, 2022

How much do you keep up with changes in the language learning world? A little? A lot? If you answered the latter, then you probably know that there's no Hungarian on Rosetta Stone.

The reason for this is quite simple. Rosetta Stone focuses on a core set of languages that meet certain criteria, namely, the languages spoken most widely around the world, and the languages that have the most economic potential. For example, Indonesia has 198 million speakers, but there is no Indonesian on Rosetta Stone because Indonesia is not an economic heavyweight.

With Ling, you can learn 60 languages, and you aren't constrained by the factor of size. We have lesser spoken languages as well as the largest languages like Mandarin Chinese. Ling takes elements that made apps like Duolingo and Rosetta Stone so popular and refines them for a great user experience.

What Is Hungarian?

As the name would suggest, Hungarian is the national language of Hungary, spoken by 13 million people making it the largest of the Uralic language family. However, you won't only hear Hungarian spoken in Hungary; there are also communities of Hungarian speakers in Slovakia, Ukraine, and Romania.

Facts About Hungarian:

  • It's really difficult to learn compared to other European languages because of its complex construction
  • Hungarians call Hungarian 'Magyar.'
  • Contrary to logic (it's surrounded by Indo-European speaking countries), the Hungarian language is classified as Finno-Ugric, which is one of the reasons it's so difficult to learn.
  • Hungarian has 14 vowels! (the alphabet in total has 44 letters)
  • When telling someone your name in Hungary, you give your last name first, I.E., Thompson Michael, not Michael Thompson.

Who Are Some Famous Hungarians?

  1. Tony Curtis was born Bernard Schwartz, and although his nationality is American, his parents both emigrated from Hungary. The work of Tony Curtis has been slightly lost on the new generation, but in the 1950s and 1960's he was tremendously popular, appearing alongside the likes of Marilyn Monroe and his wife, Janet Leigh. His two biggest films, the first of which he was nominated an Oscar for, were The Defiant Ones and Some Like It Hot. Curtis visited Hungary regularly throughout his life. Interestingly, he also played the role of Harry Houdini in a 1953 movie. The man next on our list
  2. Harry Houdini is undoubtedly one of the most famous people to have ever lived. He basically invented our modern-day conception of a magician/stuntman. Not many people know this, but he was actually born in Hungary under the name Erik Weisz. Among his most famous stunts, he was buried alive and escaped from the Chinese water torture cell. Houdini was born to a Jewish family in Budapest, one of seven children. He traveled to the United States as a small boy along with his family. If you visit Budapest now, you should drop by the house of Houdini, which is a museum of the great man.
  3. Joseph Pulitzer was born in Mako, South East of Budapest, in 1847. Subsequently, his family moved to America, where he became a famous politician in the Democratic party. However, he's most known for his Journalistic prizes, I.E., the Pulitzer Prize, given to journalists who have shown excellent work over the previous years.

No Hungarian On Rosetta Stone? What Are Some Alternatives To Learn The Language?

Now, we get to the really important stuff. What can you do as a result of there being no Hungarian on Rosetta Stone? Are there other methods or language programs?

  1. YouTube. YouTube is the best place to ensconce yourself in a language learning community. I've heard countless stories of people who begin communicating in YouTube comments and go on to help each other with their language learning aims.

This platform is best used to practice your listening and reading. Try to find videos that have English subtitles so you can begin to match sounds with words. If you can find cartoons or movies with Hungarian dialogue and English subtitles, that's perfect. Many people learn the fundamentals of the language in this specific way.

I'd also recommend using a dedicated language learning channel like Learn Hungarian with HungarianPod101.com
