The official language of the country is Georgian, which is spoken by around 3.7 million people. The language developed alongside several others in the region, though these tend to be smaller more regional languages. Within Georgian there are also several dialects that can be found across the country. All the dialects are more or less understandable for those who speak the standardized version of the language.
Georgian uses its own script for writing. It is said to be based on the Greek alphabet, though it has a total of 33 different characters to account for the unique sounds of the Georgian language. There are seven noun cases and verbs use prefixes and suffixes to signify tense, person, etc. Otherwise, there are no articles or grammatical genders.
With the country facing some difficulties, it can be easy to be discouraged to explore and learn the language. However, with proper precautions, it makes for a great destination. Speaking Georgian will be very useful but it may also possible to use Azerbaijani or Armenian to some success within those groups. If you do choose to learn Georgian, it can be very rewarding.
