Want To Learn Ukrainian?
Ukraine is a great country. Being the second largest country in Europe, it is home to a number of spectacular locations that are well worth exploring. The fact that the country ranked 8th in Europe for number of tourists is a testament to the interest in Ukraine as a holiday destination, whether for the culture, history or the people. Of course, learning Ukrainian would greatly benefit any visitors.
The Ukrainian language is spoken by more than 35 million people, even more if you count second language speakers. It is written with the Cyrillic alphabet, though adapted for Ukrainian. It is very closely related to Polish, Belarusian and Russian, to the point that they can be considered at least partially mutually intelligible.
Ukrainian uses a system of politeness, where different words and forms of words are used when speaking to those you are familiar with and those you are not. A lot of its grammar is similar to that of other Slavic languages, including the large number of cases (7), the three grammatical genders, and the use of number. Word order is typically SVO.
Is it worth learning Ukrainian? Sure, Russian has a much larger speaker base and so would be more useful. However, taking the time to learn Ukrainian before your visit will allow you to have a deeper understanding of the culture and the people. In addition, Ukrainians will greatly appreciate this show of respect to their language. It is definitely worth your time.
