You see, as global warming is becoming a much more complicated phenomenon to battle against, animal life is becoming more critical. With this said, it is a necessity for everyone to talk about animals (živali). In this blog post, we will walk you through different animals in Slovenia, along with their native names in Slovenian. If you are up for that, then let’s get started!
Most Common Animals
Slovenia is a country full of natural beauty and wild habitats. You’ll find majestic mountains, breathtaking lakes and rivers, and a diverse landscape of forests and meadows. In these landscapes, you can find animals of all kinds, from the common squirrels to the rarest of birds. Whether you are a nature lover or not, Slovenia offers plenty of things to do and see in its natural environment.
Slovenia’s three most common predators are wolves (volk), Lynxes (Risi), and bears (medved). It also has the largest animal-dwelling cave in the world, called Postojna Cave. There are more mysterious creatures in Slovenia, but first, let’s look at some common animals you must have already known.

3 Top Mysterious Animals In Slovenia
Let’s now talk about some of the most mysterious animals residing peacefully in Slovenia.
1. The Olms
The olms are of a dragon shape and are also fondly called by the locals as baby dragons. On average, scientists predict that these creatures can live up to 120 years. One of the reasons for such a long life is that this animal is can replace its limbs with new ones if it breaks or gets separated. Pretty much similar to what happens to lizards, right? But that’s not all! This creature is unique because it can live up to 10 years without food. Yes, you read that right. You don’t need to feed an olm for 10 years, and it will survive. Sounds cool, right?
2. Soča Trout
Another animal that you should know about is the Soča trout which you can find in the rivers of the Adriatic Sea catchment area. Sadly this fish is endangered and is highly sensitive to pollution. Another major factor behind it being threatened is the introduction of brown fish at the start of 20 century, and the crossbreeding between both is causing this fish to become endangered.
3. Lipizzaner
Let’s now look at a royal horse that everyone must know about: Lipizzaner. It is one of the earliest horse breeds in human history, and the breed’s name is taken from Lipica, where it first appeared in the Slovenian Karst.
The Lipizzaner is a medium-framed, symmetrically constructed, noble horse that may be used for riding, coach drawing, and executing traditional dressage maneuvers. It has an enthusiastic demeanor and a tender spirit.
