Lengalia Review_learn languages_App Review (1)

The Spanish language is the primary language in 20 countries worldwide. As of 2023, it is estimated that about 486 million people speak Spanish as a native language, making it the second most spoken language by number of native speakers. So it is no surprise that Lengalia has created a language learning platform focused on learning Spanish through their online course.

Whether you plan to visit a Spanish-speaking country or are just interested in preparing for a placement test, Lengalia can help you out in your journey of learning Spanish. In today’s Lengalia review, we’ll be talking about all the features that are unique to this platform for you to decide if it’s suitable for you to learn Spanish. Let’s begin!

What Is Lengalia?

The Lengalia platform aims to be a virtual teacher and a vocabulary trainer; it also helps you to get good practice when learning Spanish. It is particularly good for learning reading and listening very well, compared to speaking and writing. A lot of people enroll to prepare for placement tests and also to gauge their language or proficiency level. A CEFR certificate is also available, which helps to apply for a local college and is a definite plus point in job applications.

The Lengalia course was first made in 2008 by a company called Learnia S.L., based in Spain. The company was founded by Christoph Wilhelmi and Manuel Casasayas with the aim of providing high-quality online language courses for learners around the world.

The founders recognized the growing demand for language learning resources in the digital age and saw an opportunity to create an effective and convenient platform for learning Spanish. They aimed to provide learners with a comprehensive and interactive learning experience that would allow them to study at their own pace and from anywhere in the world.

How Does Lengalia Work?

The uniqueness of Lengalia is that it focuses on one language – Spanish! Often, a language learning platform will have several languages and may not be able to do a thorough job of building an in-depth platform for every language offered. On the other hand, the platform offers a virtual teacher, which is a pre-recorded video that delivers the Spanish courses.

Since the learning is based on the CEFR certificate, the course itself is designed that way, so it’s ideal that you enroll in a course for your skill level. For a year subscription, you have access to all levels like B2, C1, and C2, and also specific areas like vocabulary and podcasts. Speaking of podcasts, it’s very interesting that they are divided according to country, so that you can listen and know the difference between Spanish in Peru and Uruguay, for example.

The audio, video, and exercise platform has a progress bar that tells you what you have covered already. Similarly, under grammar exercises, you will have a host of lessons with drills like audio, reading, vocabulary practice, and communication. Eventually, you will reach the test placed at the end of each lesson. Also, when you finish each course, you take a test to get a certificate.

This is the basic idea of how the platform works. You will come across a total of 284 lessons with numerous exercises, YouTube videos, podcasts, and grammar exercises that will equip you to reach your Spanish language target.

An interesting bit to know: in Lengalia, though you learn just one language, Castilian Spanish – or European Spanish – there are other resources. One of these is the translator, which helps you translate unknown words and phrases into your native language. The choices of these are mentioned below.

EnglishGermanFinnish
BulgarianGreekFrench
CzechEstonianHungarian
DanishSpanishItalian
JapanesePolishSlovak
LithuanianPortugueseSlovenian
LatvianRomanianSwedish
DutchRussianChinese

Let me clarify, these are not languages offered in Lengalia but the native languages of learners; the translator can translate the Spanish words into your native language if it is one of the above.

Lengalia’s Interface

Although in this Lengalia review we cannot give you the exact feel of the learning platform, we will surely help you get a good understanding of it! First of all, the interface has basic colors and is more old-school in design. The icons are also very basic and generic.

Several viewers mentioned stock photos placed all over the platform with an expectation of something more genuine to Spanish language learning. You may have come across exciting and animated platforms, chatbots bouncing towards you across the screen, and constant gamified prompts, but Lengalia is not like that.

Lengalia describes its website interface as clean and minimalist, which truly hits the nail on the head. There is no app, but you can run the program with the same features on any of your gadgets – the only difference will be the screen size.

Lengalia’s Features

Let’s take a brief look at each of Lengalia’s features:

1. Vocabulary Trainer: Lengalia’s Vocabulary Trainer is a tool that helps learners practice and expand their Spanish vocabulary. It includes word lists, flashcards, and interactive quizzes to reinforce vocabulary acquisition.

2. Verb Conjugation Tool: Lengalia’s Verb Conjugation Tool assists learners in practicing Spanish verb conjugation. It allows users to input a verb in its infinitive form and provides conjugated forms for different tenses, moods, and persons. This is a very useful tool to have.

3. Online Translator: Lengalia provides an online translator tool that allows users to enter text in one language and receive a translation in another one. This feature assists with quick translations but may not always capture all nuances and context.

4. Voice Recorder: Lengalia’s Voice Recorder tool allows users to record their voice directly within the platform. This feature can be used for speaking practice and self-assessment of pronunciation. It doesn’t allow you to speak directly to a native speaker, though.

5. Learning Statistics: Lengalia tracks and provides learning statistics to users, allowing them to monitor their progress. This feature includes information such as completed lessons, exercises, scores, and time spent on different activities.

6. Questions and Answers: This is a platform for learners to ask questions related to their language learning journey. This feature allows learners to seek clarification, receive assistance, and engage with instructors or a community of language learners.

7. Virtual Trainer: This is ongoing support in the form of videos that give you in-depth knowledge of the topic before proceeding to the exercises.

8. Notes: Lengalia provides a feature that allows learners to take notes within the platform. This feature enables users to jot down important points, create study aids, or make personal annotations related to their language learning progress.

What’s New In Lengalia?

  • Vocabulary2go: This is available in the course “Spanish Vocabulary II.” It helps you download vocabulary and listen online or on the go, as the name suggests. It’s a helpful feature to have during commute or exercise to keep the immersive element full on.
  • Online Translator: There are 24 languages currently available in Lengalia; simply click on the Spanish word that you do not understand, and it immediately translates it to your native language, helping you understand and remember it easily. Lengalia promises to add more languages soon!

Lengalia: Price

You can try Lengalia for free for a limited time. After taking the placement test, you have a free trial period of about 48 hours to test out if this is a good program for you. Lengalia will suggest courses for you based on your test results. It will also allow you to access up to 3 lessons in any course in the free trial.

After that, you have to go for a subscription. Lengalia charges US$33.99 for a month’s subscription, $66.99 for 12 months, and $88.99 for 24 months. These are one-time payments, but when considered monthly, the best value is, of course, the two-year plan, which costs just $3.70 per month.

There are no podcasts and videos available in the one-month plan, while the one-year and two-year plans have everything you need, from all 24 courses to a live tutor feature. For a program that has certification, a free placement test, and online tutors, I’d say this amount is a reasonable price.

Top Learning Tools

Lengalia’s Vocabulary Builder is a tool that helps learners expand their Spanish vocabulary. It provides word lists, flashcards, and interactive quizzes to reinforce vocabulary acquisition. Learners can also create their own personalized vocabulary lists.

Lengalia includes a Pronunciation Practice tool that helps learners improve their Spanish pronunciation. The tool provides audio recordings and visual representations of sounds, allowing learners to compare their pronunciation with native speakers and receive feedback on their pronunciation accuracy.

Lengalia’s Verb Conjugator is a tool designed to help learners practice and master Spanish verb conjugation. It allows users to input a verb in its infinitive form and provides conjugated forms for different tenses, moods, and persons.

The tool generates the corresponding conjugated forms of the verb based on the input. It displays the verb forms for each selected tense, mood, and person. For example, start by entering a Spanish verb in its infinitive form (e.g., “hablar” – to speak) into the search bar of the verb conjugator tool. The tool would provide conjugated forms like “hablo” (I speak), “hablas” (you speak), “habla” (he/she speaks), etc.

In some cases, the verb conjugator may provide additional information, such as irregularities, stem changes, or special rules associated with the conjugation of the verb.

3 Super Helpful Features

  • It is quite a good platform for serious learners who are preparing for an exam or require a certain level of Spanish language proficiency.
  • There is a certificate available for every course, which proves to be very useful for applications to universities, jobs, and so on.
  • It has very good, well-structured lessons that truly give you a detailed understanding of the topic paired with the practice exercises.

3 Areas I Didn’t Like

  • You cannot communicate with a native speaker directly through the platform, and there is no interaction with other learners, although you can see their progress.
  • It isn’t the best platform to help you speak Spanish well, but it will certainly help you read and listen better.
  • There are several mistakes in the platform. Some translations are perhaps automated and are incorrectly placed in the system. This should be rechecked.

In summary, in this Lengalia review, we can conclude that the platform is an impressive one but is not for everyone. People seek the immersive element these days, and Lengalia has the classroom approach. Certainly, learning one language from one platform is good, as it offers an all-in-one learning service, but sadly, in this case, you may need other resources to compensate for certain areas of your learning.

If you seek other platforms to learn this language, take a look at Preply to learn overall Spanish, and Babbel to improve on Spanish writing. But if you are looking for something that has everything and more, try Ling!
