In France, the Gallo-Romance dialects of the north gradually pushed out Latin, and in 1539 François I declared that French was to be the only official language of the administration. From here, there was no looking back, and now there are French-speaking countries crammed with French speakers spanning the globe.
Canada: A Bilingual Nation
Crossing the Atlantic, we arrive in Canada, where French is the official language alongside English. French-speaking Canadians primarily reside in the province of Quebec, where it is the dominant language. Montreal, the second-largest French-speaking city in the world after Paris, showcases the blend of European charm and North American influences. If we cross into the USA, a country not immediately associated with being particularly French, you might be surprised to learn that French is actually the fourth most commonly spoken language. It is estimated that there a well over 2 million native as well as non-native speakers. It is probably worth noting, however, that this includes all forms of French, from Haitian Creole to the distinctive version of French spoken in Louisiana.
Belgium: A Linguistic Intersection
Crossing the pond and coming back into Europe, we have Belgium, a country nestled between France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Belgium’s linguistic landscape is unique, with French serving as one of its official languages alongside Dutch and German. The southern region of Wallonia is predominantly French-speaking, while the capital city of Brussels, as well as some surrounding areas, is bilingual. The Rest Of The World’s Lingua Franca
French Guiana, on the border of Brazil in South America, boasts 291,000 French speakers, the Pacific island of Vanuatu has 89,000 people speaking French, and France’s colonial past means there are well over a million French speakers in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. In the Middle East, Lebanon and Syria still have large populations where French is spoken.
