Ever wondered about Korean for mental health? You’ve clicked on the perfect article! We will give a general perspective on what mental health is, its background in South Korea, and some vocabulary to keep our linguistic minds hyped up and, of course, in check!

As the World Mental Health Day (October 10th) approaches, we at Ling will explore language sensitive vocabulary as part of our #MentalHealthVocabWithLing campaign. Let us begin this mind-boggling yet essential journey! Shall we?

What Is Mental Health?

Let us start by threading to the very root of our subject: mental health. What exactly is it? How essential is it? Think of this: our mind is the ruler of the kingdom of our body. When it is in a positive state, the kingdom (our body) flourishes. On the contrary, when it is in an unhealthy state, everything else is on the brink of negative effects.

Think of mental health as your emotional superhero! It’s all about feeling good, thinking clearly, and dealing with life’s ups and downs. It’s having a positive attitude and a strong mind gym to tackle challenges and enjoy the good stuff. Just like a superhero needs training, your mental health benefits from self-care and a positive mindset.

So, keep in mind that our mental health is a very important part of our whole well-being. A good life is a product of a healthy mind!

The Power Of Words On Mental Health

Language and the usage of words (such as we can see in the table above) are a huge part of our daily lives. Amazingly, words can really affect our lives—home, work, school, everything! In this context, being kind and gracious with our words will definitely build up our mental health. Imagine this: you are feeling quite sad for some reason, and then your friends suddenly compliment your outfit or your work. Suddenly, your emotions will improve.

In the same sense, words are like mental health superheroes! They can do amazing things. Hence, we can keep in mind these four important things, with regard to the significance of our words to mental health:

1. Talking about feelings is like a mental spa day, helping us deal with stress. Thus, having a conversation with a friend about your mental health is a great help—like a bottle of water on a sunny day!

2. Bad media language can be a villain, causing stigma about mental health. That is why we must be wary of what we say on social media, because we may become a cause of mental health problems for some people, or may even add up to misunderstandings about a specific mental illness.

3. The words we pick shape our thoughts and choices—like magical spells! The words that we choose to accept will affect the way we act by clouding our thoughts. Because of that, it is best to do our best to filter the words that we consume. Indeed, there are circumstances that we cannot avoid, such as sudden words from a person; however, we still have control over some things, such as our actions. So, part of this is also distancing ourselves from places where negative words are present.

4. Positive talk = power-up mode! Negative talk = emotional hurdles. Have you ever experienced a conversation full of gossip or complaints? That is one example of negative talk. It is best to avoid that kind of conversation, as words have a huge effect on our mental health, as explained above. Instead, talk about things that are delightful or news to celebrate! Also, this includes the words we say to our friends or family. Always opt for positivity, like compliments—those will cause your loved ones to smile!
