Facts About Memrise

memrise vs duolingoIt is a wonderful study aid that helps its users memorize signs, expressions, and vocabulary. Although it is mostly about learning a language, you can study any subject with it. It is perfect for math, science, economics, or any other course created and shared by users.

Memrise interface is not that highly polished and easy to use interface. You should start with the first lesson before starting the course. All lessons after they remain locked until the end of the current one. Think of it as a game, if you don’t successfully complete a level, you won’t move on to the next one.

Even if you are a free member, you can choose as many courses as you want, it will not limit you. You can choose programs for beginners or even advanced. It all depends on what you are capable of.

If you think your teaching is going too slowly, you can change the number of subjects you study based on the settings. Whether you want to go slow or fast is up to you. As you go, the icon in the shape of a plant begins to grow and the more you go, it grows stems, leaves, and then turns into a flower.

Story About Duolingo

memrise vs duolingoDuolingo is designed as a game in which you cross levels by taking simple lessons. Each lesson consists of one or more tests, as well as a final test that you can do to update the words from the whole lesson. The tests are designed to slowly introduce you to language learning. Each new test contains a few new words, so at the end of each test, you increase your vocabulary of words you know or at least recognize. The test itself is not a problem for you to pass, even though you do not know the new words.

Duolingo introduces you to new words by showing them in pictures and then in the continuation of the test he places them in sentences and expressions in order to determine them. If you answer a question incorrectly, it shows you the answer and that question will be repeated at the end of the test until you answer it correctly.

After passing all the tests from one lesson, Duolingo opens new lessons that you can learn in the next period but also gives 2 lingots. Lingots are a Duolingo currency that you can exchange in the Shop for various benefits or game improvements.

Memrise Vs Duolingo: Pros And Cons

Memrise

Pros Cons
Presentation of vocabulary combined with sound clips from native speakers helps a lot in committing words to memory. The quality of content is not that good.
Plenty of programs, languages, levels. A lack of uniformity can be noticed since there is a lot of user-created content, learning experiences that make differences among the languages offered.
Vocabulary lists allow you to tailor your experience to your specific needs. Vocabulary lists can only be found and added via a Web browser
It uses a spaced repetition system. Lack of access to extra courses in-app
The free version offers everything. The exercises can get repetitive.
  Memrise is only vocabulary focused.
Website navigation is clunky and poorly designed.
There is a lack of human interaction.
Not meant for Advanced level learners.

Duolingo

Pros Cons
Duolingo offers 98 different language courses in 38 languages There is no information in the beginning about how the whole course works.
Duolingo is polished and well-designed. There is a lack of effectiveness in helping students to fully learn a language.
Phrases or vocabulary you learn is always spoken out loudly. There are also recording exercises to improve your speaking skills. With Duolingo, you learn by parroting phrases without even beginning to cover the background stories that grammar and pragmatics tell.
The interface is easy to navigate, and the progression of each lesson is clearly outlined. Their apps break, sometimes temporarily and sometimes permanently
Every language follows the same basic outline. Their team doesn't fix bugs.
Consistency in the quality of content is noticeable. Duolingo doesn't use a practical phrase. There are sentences that don’t make any sense and you’ll never actually use them.
Duolingo keeps tabs on which words are your weakest. At the end of every lesson is a tab featuring these “weak words,” which you can then focus on exclusively. If you want to learn a certain topic, you haven't got any access to it unless you go through all the previous tasks.
Phrases or vocabulary you learn is always spoken out loudly. There are also recording exercises to improve your speaking skills.

Duolingo Vs Memrise: Final Thoughts

Duolingo Vs Memrise...which one is the better option for you? Well, the answer to that question definitely depends on what works for you. They’re both great, but they accomplish different goals. Duolingo is more of a general language learning site with a nice learning curve that everyone can enjoy, while Memrise is mostly vocabulary.

Duolingo has levels dedicated to grammar, and on the web version, you also have a grammar explanation for each level.

Memrise is very good if you want to memorize something irregular. For example, while studying German I couldn’t learn irregular verbs at the imperfect. So, I found a course about them (created by another user) and managed to learn them pretty quickly.

In my honest opinion, Duolingo Vs Memrise works best hand-in-hand. Both use different methods (gradual progression for Duolingo and spaced repetition for Memrise). Duolingo takes the win over Memrise for the content itself (Duolingo goes much deeper into my chosen language). On the other hand, Memrise has better sound recording while Duolingo’s is a kind of robotic-sounding and can sometimes bug out.

I wish you all best of luck in finding the right platform(s) for learning a new language! You can try using Ling App as an alternative to learning languages that are unsupported by these two platforms.
