To make it easy for you, I’ll break the question down. آپ (aap) means you, کہاں (kahan) means where, سے (sey) means from, and ہیں (hain) means are. This is a polite way of asking about someone’s country. You can use it with strangers.

If someone is your age or younger, for instance, your student, junior, or friend, then you could say تم کہاں سے ہو؟ (tum kahan sey ho?). It has the exact words as the first one mentioned before, having آپ (aap) replaced with تم (tum) and ہیں (hain) replaced by ہو (ho). ہو (ho) is the conjugation of the “is” verb for تم (tum).
