Traveling in Telugu regions comes with its own set of challenges. For starters, where to go? How to go? Why go at all? And then there’s the language. With less than 15% of the population being able to speak English, it’s a daunting task to explore the regions without knowing how to speak Telugu.

With that in mind, today we’ll learn where you can go and how to navigate Telugu regions. Then, I’ll give you a few resources to help with traveling, boarding, helplines in emergencies, etc. Let’s get started.

Traveling In Telugu Regions: Exploring Andhra Pradesh

Tirupathi

Andhra Pradesh is India’s third most visited state for domestic tourism, largely due to Tirupati temple, also known as the Holy City. Renowned as the wealthiest temple in the world, Sri Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati attracts about 30-40 million devotees yearly, making it one of the most famous Hindu pilgrimage sites in South India.

The temple is mostly granite and built in the Dravidian architectural style on Tirumala hills. It has many gopurams (gateway towers), intricately carved stonework, and large courtyards. This is one of the top tourist destinations for anyone visiting Andhra Pradesh. It is truly a sight to behold.

Araku Valley

Araku Valley is a picturesque hill station located in the eastern ghats of coastal Andhra Pradesh. Known for its scenic beauty and cool climate, it showcases a true tribal lifestyle, culture, traditions, and more. You can visit the ancient Borra caves, trek in Ananthagiri hills, or visit tribal museums to see how life was before modern advancements.

The largest city of Andhra Pradesh, Vishakapatnam, is very near to Araku Valley, so you can make a two-day trip here and then go back to Vishakapatnam. Located next to the Bay of Bengal, this city can treat you to a luxurious stay, great food, and plenty of activities.

Gandikota

The “Grand Canyon of India.” This historic village is in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh state, known for its Grand Canyon-like scenery and natural beauty. There’s a fort called Gandikota Fort, built by 13th-century Kakatiya kings. Gandikota has become an adventure hotspot in recent years, offering opportunities for rock climbing, trekking, and kayaking in the Pennar River.

There are many smaller places, like Lambasingi, Vizag, Lepakshi, and Horsley Hills, which all offer something unique.

Traveling In Telugu Regions: Tourist Attractions In Telangana

Hyderabad

Known as Bhagyanagaram, this historical city was founded in 1589 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, to replace Golkonda as the capital. The city has numerous tourist attractions that can fill up your itinerary.

Some of them include Golconda Fort (known for its architectural wonders), Hussain Sagar, Charminar Fort, Qutb Shahi Tombs, Salar Jung Museum, Nehru Zoological Park, Ramoji Film City, KBR National Park, and religious sites like Macca Masjid.

Warangal

An ancient city known for its ancient architecture and rich cultural heritage, Warangal Fort was the capital of the Kakathita Dynasty. Here, you can visit Warangal Fort, the Thousand Pillar Temple, Ramappa Temple (a UNESCO heritage site), the Geological Museum, and more.

Many more places like Nalgonda (Bhongir Fort, Nagarjuna Sagar Dam), Khammam (Khammam Fort, Wildlife Sanctuary), Pochampally, etc., can give you a completely new outlook. We’d recommend doing deeper research to plan your trip with an in-depth guide to Telangana’s tourist places.

Also, keep in mind that the best time to visit any of these places is during winter. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are some of the hottest states in India during other seasons, so you really wouldn’t enjoy them during that time.

Let’s say you are catching a bus to one of the above tourist attractions. How would you navigate? Of course, you can use Google Translate, but that only works half the time and gives bookish answers. Why not learn some basic phrases that can help you introduce yourself in Telugu and ask essential questions?

So here’s your vocabulary for traveling in Telugu regions.

Travel And Accommodation

Okay, let’s say you’ve practiced your vocabulary and are ready to start traveling in Telugu regions. How are you going to travel, and where are you going to stay? Here are five tips to help you plan your travel and accommodation.

  1. Once you decide where to go, check for tickets in apps like MakeMyTrip, GoIbibo, or ClearTrip. These aggregators can help you book your travel tickets and also help you with accommodation. Be sure to check for reviews before you book. That’s the easier way.
  2. After you reach your destination, check if there are ride-hailing services like Ola, Uber, and Rapido for local transportation. These will make it much easier for you to find a cab or auto. If not, we’d recommend you book an auto or cab for the entire day. Ask the hotel front desk for help arranging it.
  3. Once your accommodation and travel are sorted, use apps like Swiggy and Zomato to order food or explore top-rated local restaurants to indulge in local food. Instagram also works wonders in finding great hidden attractions and restaurants to explore.
  4. You have apps to book tickets, book accommodation, find taxis/autos, and find/order food. Once you plan all these, download instant payment apps like PhonePe and Google Pay.
  5. Almost every vendor in India now accepts digital payments, including taxes, autos, and street vendors. This way, you can minimize using your credit and debit cards at ATMs or other locations and avoid getting hacked. Remember to carry cash, but not a lot of it. Also, always share your location with one of your Telugu friends on Google Maps to be on the safer side.
  6. Use apps like Ling to learn Telugu greetings and conversational phrases like How are you in Telugu? Practice before venturing out. Knowing a little bit of Telugu is better than not knowing any. Furthermore, Telugu people love those who try to learn their language, so you’ll be greeted with a broad smile, and they will be eager to help.

How Do You Say “I’m Traveling” In Telugu?

“I’m traveling” in Telugu is Nenu Prayanistunnanu (నేను ప్రయాణిస్తున్నాను).

FAQs About Traveling In Telugu regions

1. Is It Safe To Travel In Telugu Regions?

Yes, it’s completely safe. But like any other place, taking certain precautions is always better. So make sure to find out where the nearest police station is and book your accommodation close by. If you are traveling alone, we’d recommend you share your whereabouts with some local friends or your traveling agency.

2. Is It Costly To Travel In Telugu Regions?

Not really. Most of the places are relatively accessible, and public transport is well-established. I’m not giving a price breakdown here, but it wouldn’t be more than 200 USD to cover any places at a reasonably good hotel.

3. Telugu Has Many Dialects, Does It Make It Hard To Navigate?

No. Though Telugu states have many dialects, most understand the standard regional language, so go to the dialect taught to language learners, and you should be fine. Here’s a link to help you learn some essentials in Telugu. And, when it comes to Hyderabad, Urdu is the official language of the city, so if you know Urdu or Hindi, you’re good to go.

To Round Off

That’s it for now. But before you go on your adventure, please ensure you have all your necessary documents ready. Make a note of places to go, how to go, and where to go, and stick to it. Take help from locals, but be wary of overly friendly ones.

Lastly, practice your Telugu and get some grip on the language. Use apps like the Ling app to polish your skills and practice regularly. Until next time!
