A wedding is an event which is special in everyone's life. Everybody gets married at some age, which is one of life's much-awaited phases. What makes it even more exciting and memorable is the traditions followed at the wedding. In line with this, there are different traditions in each state and country, which makes it unique. In this article, we will discuss the Albanian wedding and all the customs followed by it. Let's get started!

Albanian Wedding Traditions

Albanian wedding ceremony involves lots of beautiful traditions that are described below:

Swanky Stationery

It is customary to send invitations whenever we get invited to important events, right? In the case of Albania, invitations are a big thing! This is the first and foremost custom of the wedding as this piece of paper is meant to be created based on traditional designs. For instance, it should be attractive and have a unique charcoal color, gold foil accents, gold seal, and white lettering. It must also have a touch of vellum paper material. Some people spend lots of money on stationery alone, while others order enticing cards, which are just as unique.

Preparations Of The Wedding

Many preparations are involved both for the bride and groom. In earlier times, Albanian weddings used to be held in the yards and homes where women cooked food for the guests and welcomed them. Cleaning of the house used to get started months before the wedding. Today, weddings are usually celebrated in luxurious halls and restaurants where the whole village is invited to participate.

Blossom Bouquet

Albanian Wedding

Albanian wedding traditions involve the custom of giving a beautiful flower bouquet to the bride, which is presented by the youngest boy of the groom's family. The reason behind this Albanian tradition is that flowers represent good luck to the bride and the groom. At the same time, the young boy among the groom's relatives wishes for a son in the couple's future life.

Bride Hide's Money

This beautiful custom is performed at every Albanian wedding. What happens is that the bride deliberately hides money under her sandals to purchase a wedding gift for her future husband, and this present is given during their wedding reception. This wedding tradition is very precious for your future husband as it shows the wife's devotion to him.

Little Boy Finds Money In Bride's Sandals

This tradition is the continuation of the previous one. After the bride arrives at her husband's house on the wedding day, a little boy waits for the bride to take her shoes off and enter the groom's home. Right after the moving moment of the bride taking her shoes off, the little boy takes the money from her sandals and sits on the bride's lap. This gesture of the male kid is to wish the couple a son in the new life.

Traditional Bride Groom Dance

Traditional bride-groom dance is the most alluring and appealing moment in the whole ceremony. All the groom's relatives and bride's family gets involved in this pomp to make it to the top on the wedding day. During this traditional dance, the guests and all the family, including male children, throw banknotes and make it rain on the couple to wish them wealth in their future life.

Eating Honey And Bread

In this part, the groom's mother and the family members welcome the bride at the house's main gate. The groom's mother feeds honey and bread to the bride on the wedding day. This is a critical Albanian wedding tradition in Albanian culture performed to wish good luck to the couple to have a sweet and prosperous relationship ahead. The groom's mother performs this tradition with every Albanian bride before she enters her right foot in the groom's house.

Bride's Dowry

Dowry is the one leading custom of most Asian weddings, and the same is true for Albania. The bride's dowry includes gifts she brings for the groom's family, including presents for the close family members, most importantly, for the groom's father. It has embroidered pillows for the bride's use, blankets, carpets, furniture, etc.

On the other hand, talking about presents, the groom's family also sends charming gifts to the bride's house, including jewelry and fancy clothes for the bride to wear on her big day and the other four seasons.

Wedding Gown

Albanian Wedding

The wedding gown is an integral part of the wedding ceremony. Nobody can imagine a wedding without the bride's dress (mostly traditional dresses, but things are changing). It is presented by the groom's family but selected by the bride. This choice is the most strenuous task of the wedding.

Brides mostly try more than fifty gowns to select one to wear on the wedding day to impress their groom. Albanian brides mostly wear a barbie gown of white color splendid with delicate embroidery with a long tail covering the flour or carried mainly by the bridesmaids.

Krushqit

Krushkit is an important Albanian tradition in Albanian culture in which the groom selects a group of people from his family who accompany him before taking the bride. Having this group is the same as the bride having bridesmaids.

This group includes specific people like the youngest niece, the groom's sister-in-law, a respected senior man who leads the groomsmen group, the oldest nephew, and the groom himself. The rules of having these specific people in the krushqit vary from region to region; some people also involve other people of the two families.

Krushqit Goes To Take The Bride

This krushqit travels to the bride's family in decorated cars, mainly with the national flower of Albania, i.e., the red Poppy (optional). This group reaches the bride's house, is welcomed by the head of the family, i.e., the bride's father, and makes an entrance.

The youngest niece provides flowers to the bride, and after this, the bride is accompanied by the nephew and niece, presented to the groomsmen group, and moves to her new house.

Firing Guns For The Bride's Arrival

This tradition is a sign of victory for the groom and his family that they have completed the wedding and taken the bride to her new home. Groom's family fires shots when the Albanian bride enters the house. Firing shots celebrate this moment of joy and excitement.

Bride's Cry

Marriage is an emotional ride of the bride's travel journey because she has to leave her family and enter a special place she has never been to. With that said, it is almost always expected that the bride will cry during the wedding. The bride's tears are a mix of joy and sadness. She feels sad because she is leaving her family, and at the same time, she is at the top of the world to finally be with her groom.

Albanian Wedding Lasts The Whole Week

Albanian weddings take a whole week to complete. These include a lot of traditions and customs which greatly enjoy the entire village who has participated in the marriage ceremonies. There are many functions carried out by the couple and their families before the ceremony, i.e., the wedding party or the reception.

The gold coin is an essential gift the future bride receives from the groom and is a sign of engagement. The bride receives many other advantages from her in-laws, including a wedding gown, jewelry, etc. This giving and receiving of presents start way before the wedding, so it is a long time that an Albanian wedding takes.

Outfits Of The Bridesmaids

Albanian Wedding

The bride herself primarily plans the outfits of the bridesmaids. The bride wears white, so she devises a decent color for the bridesmaids like tea pink, light blue, sea green, etc. All the bridesmaids wear the color and the same designer outfit so that they look similar, and only the bride becomes evident in the whole group.

Precious Flower Girl

The flower girl is a young girl who carries flowers at the wedding. She is from the bride's side and remains with the bride throughout the ceremony. She wears a beautiful dress chosen purely by the sweet girl herself.

Cocktail Hour

This is an hour between the dinner and the ceremony, and it usually begins between 4 to 6 pm. All the guests get together at the venue and meet the bride and the groom. All have happiness and blessings in their eyes for the couple. They embrace them warmly and powerfully, which means a lot for the couple, and they take these graceful favors of the guests to begin their new lives.

Wedding Cake

The wedding cake is planned by the couple. Most prefer chocolate and cream mixed with strawberry toppings, and the custom cake topper handcrafted a couple on the top of the cake. The couple cuts the cake in front of all the guests, and then the groom and bride feed each other before the cake is distributed among the guests. Who doesn't love food anyway?

Couple Dance

This is the one tradition that the couple eagerly waits for during the entire wedding. Right after the cake ceremony all the couples present in the hall perform dancing and so do the newlyweds. This is the first dance performance of the team after getting married and has a special place in the memory book of the bride and groom that remains till life.
