What Does Urdu Rhyme Sound Like In A Song?

If you have ever heard the musicality of the Urdu language, you will know what I mean. Take a very famous Bollywood Hindi film song from the 90s, which is saturated with beautiful Urdu lyrics. One of its stanzas goes like this:

He is like a fragrance, Wo yaar hai jo khushbuu ki tarah, (وہ یار ہے جو خوشبو کی طرح)
Whose language is like Urdu, Jiski zubaan Urdu ki tarah, (جس کی زبان اُردو کی طرح)
He is the evening, the night, my universe, Wo shaam-raat, meri qaaynaat (وہ شام رات، میری کائنات)
He is my beloved, my love. Wo yaar mera saiyyaan saiyyaan (وہ یار میرا سیاں سیاں)

Here is the meaning: That beloved who is all fragrance – khushbuu (خوشبو), the one whose speech is sweet like Urdu, she is my evening – shaam (شام ) and my night – raat (رات), she is my world – qaayenaat (کائنات), she is my beloved darling.

Rhyming Words In Urdu: An Important Linguistic Aspect

Rhyming is a fundamental tool and concept in linguistics and language learning. It involves matching sounds in words with syllables at the end of a phrase or sentence, and the result creates rhythm and musicality, making language more enjoyable and memorable. That pays off in four different ways:

  • In linguistics it helps identify patterns, meanings and structures, and lets researchers find commonalities between different languages that give insight into the history and evolution of language.
  • In phonetics it helps identify similar-sounding words and sounds, which builds a better understanding of pronunciation and phonology.
  • In language learning it aids the acquisition of new vocabulary and the development of language skills, which is why rhyming games and activities are so often used in classrooms.
  • As a mnemonic device it helps learners remember new vocabulary and phrases, and it is particularly helpful for children, who may struggle to remember new words through traditional memorization techniques.

By learning rhymes and practicing them, learners can improve their pronunciation, intonation and fluency.

What Is Maqta In Urdu Grammar?

In Urdu Grammar, maqta (مقطع) is an essential part of Urdu poetry, especially of ghazal (غزل). It refers to the last two lines, or last couplet, of the poem.

It generally contains takhallus (تخلص), which is the poet’s pen name, and concludes the poem with its final essence or a witty thought.

As an example, here is the maqta of one of mir taqi mir’s (میر تقی میر) ghazal hasti apni habab ki si hai (ہستی اپنی حباب کی سی ہے):

“Mir, in those half-closed eyes” Mir, in neem baaz ankhon main (میرؔ ان نیم باز آنکھوں میں)

“there is an intoxication like that of wine” Saari masti sharab ki si hai (ساری مستی شراب کی سی ہے).

What Is Radeef In Urdu?

Radeef (رَدیف) is another component of Urdu poetry that comes after qafiya (قافیہ). It refers to a word or phrase that is repeated at the end of each line, after the rhyming word.

For instance, here are the radeef and qafiya in one of Mirza Ghalib’s Urdu poem:

“Thousands of desire, each so overwhelming” hazaron khuwaish aesi ke har khuwaish pe dum nikle (ہزاروں خواہشیں ایسی کہ ہر خواہش پہ دم نکلے)

“many of my wishes came true, yet still felt underwhelming” bohat nikle mere armaan lekin phir bhi kum nikle (بہت نکلے میرے ارمان لیکن پھر بھی کم نکلے).

Here dum (دم) and kum (کم) are the qafiya and nikle (نکلے) is the radeef.
