What Is The State Of The Fitness Industry In Vietnam?
For much of the history of Vietnam, recreational fitness was the furthest thing from the average person’s mind. The population was agrarian for centuries, and the mathematics did not consist of wondering how to burn calories but rather how to conserve them.
That all changed when Vietnam embraced free market principles in the 1980s. Since then, obesity has become an ever-increasing problem for public health officials. In 2021 it was estimated that 27% of school children in urban areas were now obese, which is a remarkable turnaround in a short time.

Because material needs like basic nutrition are being met, this has caused an explosion in demand for fitness centers. In fact, the Vietnamese fitness club industry will be worth in excess of $ 3.5 billion by 2023, as stated by the Vietnam Fitness Services Market Outlook Report.
The big players in the industry include California Fitness, Elite fitness, and Fit24. Often the only thing Vietnamese about these gyms is their locations. The fees are way out of bounds for the average Vietnamese person.
Another thing to consider is the explosion of social media usage and how Instagram models greatly affect the market. Gym selfies have become a whole new version of photography hitherto not seen before the invention of the smartphone. Young Vietnamese people see their idols in the western world and try to emulate them.
Although it’s difficult to argue against a populace that takes care of its health, these gym selfies also have a darker side. Social science data shows that there’s also been an explosion in eating disorders and body dysmorphia since Facebook took over Instagram and sent its popularity into the stratosphere. Combine this with photoshop, and it’s a potential disaster for many young people who spend so much of their lives online.

Learn The Vietnamese Language With Ling
There you have it- Gym vocabulary in Vietnamese and related words and phrases courtesy of Ling.
This blog is designed to run in tandem with our app. If you can find an article in our Vietnamese blog about a given subject, the chances are, there is a corresponding lesson in our app. We do everything from the most common words to spaceship vocabulary.
Our core mission was to ensure that learning a language didn’t have to be the drag that it was. In fact, a perfect metaphor is what we talked about today: fitness.
I don’t know about you, but I often make the mistake when signing up at a gym of training way too hard in the first few days. What tends to happen is that I injure myself or completely lose motivation because I’ve made it such a grueling process. The sensible approach would be to do smaller repetitive sets over many days focusing on consistency instead of how much weight I can lift in the shortest space of time.
Well, Ling is the same. It’s designed to be used in 10-15 minute bursts where you practice all the major skills: reading, writing, listening, and vocabulary. The app reminds you daily to get your practice in, and there’s a leaderboard to compare yourself to other users. Over time you see and feel your gains accruing.
As we said, this blog is chock full of articles, and here are a few others that might interest you, including sports vocabulary in Vietnamese, which touches on many of the things connected to today. I’d also recommend weather conditions in Vietnamese so you can decide whether to exercise indoors or outdoors.
