Interesting Ukrainian Christmas Traditions
Before you start learning how to say Ukrainian Christmas greetings, you should know some of the Christmas traditions in the country.
For example, do Ukrainians buy a Christmas tree and put it in their living room? Is it customary to exchange gifts on December 25th? Christmas is celebrated differently all around the world, so you can never assume that just because one country celebrates a holiday one way, another country does the same.

Cooking And Serving Kutia
The celebration of Christmas will not be complete if this Ukrainian staple is not served and eaten. Kutia is a dish that is made up of poppy seeds and wheat grains. Considered by many to be “God’s dish”, this meal is served during the Christmas season to symbolize unity and victory.
Although this dish is very popular in Ukraine, you can also find it in other parts of Eastern Europe.
Either Celebrated On The 25th Of December Or The 7th Of January
Typically, Christmas is always celebrated on the 25th of December. However, when you live or visit Ukraine during this season, it can be celebrated on either the 25th of December or the 7th of January.
This is due to the fact that there are various churches that follow other calendars. For example, if you come from an Orthodox church, they celebrate Christmas on January 7th. This is what’s known as an “Orthodox Christmas”. That being said, if you love the Christmas season, then you should definitely go to Ukraine where they celebrate it twice!
Preparing 12 Christmas Dishes
Symbolizing the 12 apostles, it is very common to see 12 varieties of dishes when you sit down for dinner in a typical Ukrainian household.
Besides singing Christmas carols and giving gifts to one another, Ukrainians also celebrate the season by preparing and eating big feasts. What’s most important to Ukrainians is spending time with loved one’s and savoring the moment.
