Relationships In Albania

The first thing to say about dating in Albania is that there is a clear difference between the countryside and the city. As with almost every country on earth, cities tend to be more liberal and cosmopolitan, and the country tends to be more traditional.

In order to have a successful relationship here, your need to know relationship vocabulary in Albanian and understand a bit about the culture. Winging it just isn’t going to work!

So how liberal is Albania? We get a rough idea by comparing the relative size of the capital and the total population. Tirana has approximately 500,000 people, while the population of Albania is around 2 million. That means a quarter of the people live in the capital city. However, it has to be said that a lot of those might be economic migrants.

With all that being said, Tirana, the liberal center, is still far more traditional than the likes of Northern European capitals.

Family And Relationships

If you get into a relationship, family members play a big part. In Northern European cultures, you are far more likely to be part of an individual unit; however, in Southern Europe, the relationship unit is extended out to the extended family. It is not uncommon for newlyweds to live with the groom’s parents until they can afford their own place, and even then, the in laws will constantly be around trying to help you out.

One thing to watch out for if you organize a date is that time isn’t exactly the same concept as it is in other parts of the world. If your date says he/she will be there for 8 o’clock, expect them to be 30 mins late. Also, with traditional gender roles still quite firmly in place, it is more common for the man to pay for the dinner than the woman.

The good news is that if a man/woman agrees to go out with you, and you really like them, this is a really good sign. Albanians don’t really do ‘casual’ the way Northern Europeans do. If they agree to go out for some traditional Albanian coffee with you, the chances are that you already have a place in their heart.

Marriage In Albania

Marriage is a solid institution in Albania. Divorce rates remain very low compared to the rest of Europe.

The fertility rate in Albania is 1.6 children per woman, which is quite low especially compared to historical numbers. However much higher than places like Japan which are at 1.3.

Albanians usually get married quite young. A 2011 poll showed an age of 23.6 for women and 29.3 for men. We suspect those numbers have trended up since then with increasing western influence.

Some reports indicate there is still a certain amount of arranged marriages in the countryside; however, these are also declining.

Abortion is legal in Albania and can be carried out until week 12 of the pregnancy.

  1. Speaking. Traditionally, speaking has been the most challenging element of language learning to practice. Ling has tried to combat this by developing a chatbot that allows you to simulate a real conversation with an A.I.
  2. Listening. Ling excels with listening. Native Albanian speakers record all the audio.
  3. Vocabulary. SRS flashcards ensure that you are presented with new and practiced Albanian words at graded intervals. That means a constant interplay between your long and short-term memory.
  4. Writing. The Albanian alphabet will be recognizable to you as it uses the same Latin alphabet as English; however, it has a total of 36 languages. Have no fear. You can practice writing in this new script.
  5. Grammar. Ling prefers to take more of a hands-off approach when it comes to grammar. However, grammar guides are available for those of you who like to get your teeth stuck into some second conditionals!

That’s enough Albanian vocabulary for today. Try Ling if you’re interested in learning a new language that doesn’t just focus on basic translations.
