No conversation is better than an eco-friendly one, and to have that in Albanian, you should know the words for plants in Albanian. The first word you need to know is “plants” in Albanian or Bimët. Let’s walk you through the different terms that you can use if you ever find yourself talking about plants during your trip to Albania. If you’re ready for that, then let’s get started!

Greeneries In Albania

Whether you’re a vegetarian or someone interested in herbal products, you’ll find Albania as a haven! It is one of the few countries with a large variety of lush greeneries to the point that you can find almost any herb you could think of – and more! The herbs are used by the locals in many different ways, but most commonly in medicine.

For instance, they have calendula plants known to help relieve skin irritations. Since they knew of that benefit, companies infused this herb into items like soaps, lipsticks, and creams. So if you’ll ask me, this is the best place to shop for organic products.

The flower calendula is also one of the most popular Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAP) exports in recent years. Despite not receiving enough attention, the yellow-orange flower, sage, oregano, and wild mountain thyme, are at the top of the list of Albanian MAPS exports.

3 Most Popular Albanian Plants

Aromanian Butterbur

Go to Albania in the spring season, and you will see that the diet of the Aromanian people, who reside in the hilly area of Mokra in Southeast Albania, includes butterbur (Petasites hybridus). It is a flowering plant from the Asteraceae family, and it is one of the wild species that are nutrient-dense.

Initially, they start as small groups of tiny pinkish flowers. The plant produces clusters of little, pinkish flowers with large leaves in the early spring. Aromanian people have used it as a food source and in traditional medicine. You might think that the entire Albanian population uses that, but there are no such records in history.

Nena

This plant (Chenopodium bonus-Henricus), known locally as “nena,” is a species of wild spinach. It has been historically collected by the indigenous Kelmendi residents residing in the mountain range bordering Albania’s and Montenegro’s borders between late spring and summer. The plant has tiny, green blossoms and wide, triangular or diamond-shaped leaves. This plant, a good source of iron and chlorophyll, is advised for anemia sufferers.

Hart’s Tongue Fern

Hart’s tongue fern (Phyllitis scolopendrium), also known as bar mushknis locally, is one of several wild plants and herbs that members of the Kelmendi community who reside in Kelmend in northern Albania traditionally harvest for food and medicinal. The plant is known as the herb of the lungs. It has a distinctive bottom leaf lamina form, which resembles a human lung. It is thought to provide health advantages to the lungs.
