Have you ever heard of the High Tatras? The high Tatras are mountains that can be seen along the borders of Slovakia and Poland. It is the home to many wild animals in Slovakia. Animal Names In Slovak Language
Bear – Medveď
‘Bear’ in Slovak is called medveď (pronounced: med-vej). In Slovak, you can find Brown bears in the Tatras Mountains. ‘Brown bear’ is Medveď hnedý in Slovak.
In Slovakia, the brown bears were nearly extinct at one point due to excessive hunting. However, they are now an animal species protected under both national and international law. This led to the increase in Brown bears, which also brought about another trouble for the Slovakians- bear attacks. The brown bear can grow up to 3 meters high and can be 350kg heavy. It will be scarier if the one coming straight for you is a female brown bear protecting its cub. So make sure you know what you are doing if you want to catch a glimpse of some bears.
Deer – Jeleň
‘Deer’ in Slovak is called jeleň (pronounced: yell-en).
There are plenty of different species of deers in the High Tatras. Some of them include red deer, roe deer, and fallow deer.
Red deer is a species that can be found all over Europe; it is also one of the biggest deer species. Due to their size, they have very small predators coming for them. The male red deer, a stag, can grow up to 230 cm tall and weigh up to 500 kg- these even-toed ungulates animals can have the same weight as a grand piano! Even if the female red deer is smaller, I definitely would not be messing with these gentle-looking creatures. The females can alert the whole herd of danger while the males can fight with their antlers.
Wolf – Vlk
In Slovak, ‘wolf’ is called Vlk (pronounced: vilk).
Wolves are common in European mythology. The same goes for Slovakia. Wolves are part of the supernatural beings in the Slavic religion, typically can be found in the form of Vila, a type of nymph that can turn into certain types of animals, including a wolf.
Usually, people would just categorize the wolves found in Slovakia as Grey wolves; however, the specific name would be the Eurasian wolf- a subspecies of the Grey wolf. This subspecies of wolves is slimmer and taller compared to the common grey wolf.
They are usually shy, but they roam around in national parks like the National Park of Sloveny.
Lynx – Rys
Lynx is called rys in Slovak (pronounced: reese).
The Eurasian Lynx is part of the big cat family. They hunt and behave just like other big cats, except their prey is usually smaller animals.
They usually move around alone, except during mating season- a typical cat behavior. The Euroasian Lynx’s characteristics are triangular ears, black-tip tails, and different fur colors with dark spots patterns. They only come out at night, though, since they prefer to laze around and bask in sunlight during the daytime.
The Eurasian Lynx can be found in many European countries, but they face extinction due to irresponsible hunting. Hence, many efforts were made to conserve this species by conservation efforts and reintroducing programs; and they are currently one of the protected animal species in Europe.
Another big cat that can be found in the forests of Slovakia is the European wildcat. The European wild cat looks more like our usual domestic cats but a little bigger with thick fur and fluffy ears. This powerful feline is always hunted for its thick fur, which makes them endangered everywhere.
Snake – Had
Snakes in Slovakian is called Had (pronounced: huut).
Snakes in Europe? Yes, not all snakes prefer the warm climate. In Slovakia, there are only a few species of snakes, and most of them are harmless (not venomous). The only one you should really look out for is the viper or Adder (Vipera berus). They can be found along the riverbanks and in the mountain ranges with their red eyes and zig-zag patterns.
Though they are not as dangerous or extreme as the cobra or other predators, a bite of this one can cause inflammation and can be rather painful, so you need to go straight to the hospital if you get bitten.
Bird – Vták
‘Birds’ in Slovak is named Vták (pronounced: fuh-tak). Some of the exotic bird species you can find in Slovakia are
