Lithuanian villages were still wearing folk costumes until the end of the 19th century, even later in some areas. The costume of each of Lithuania’s ethnic regions was unique and decorative, characterized by colorful and inventive patterns, peacock or rooster feathers, bright overlay patterns, followed by intricately crafted lace details and embroidery adorned clothes.
On Sundays and special occasions, the men’s clothing is quite sober in color. Lithuanians wore dark, undyed wool in the form of short jackets and greatcoats. For the most part, trousers and vests were the same color as the rest of their outerwear. Nonetheless, plaids and stripes were popular in most places. Throughout Lithuania, men wore high-cut leather boots, bright woven sashes, and felt hats decorated with peacock or rooster feathers.
Women’s clothing was generally more picturesque and vivid than men’s, displaying many traditional regional features. The typical women’s costume consisted of a white linen shirt, bright woven sashes, a long and wide skirt, high cut leather boots, an ornate bodice, and dark backgrounds characterized by aprons with beautiful embroidery. Women wore large shawls with elaborate headpieces, jewelry, and other accessories.
The Most Popular Seasonal Clothing In Lithuania
There are four seasons a year in Lithuania, each requiring a different outfit and the umbrella as an accessory. The weather can change suddenly during spring, summer, and autumn, and it can snow in winter, so keeping a small umbrella handy at all times is a good idea.
Summer Clothing
Some summers people wear cardigans, some summers they walk wearing tank tops. It is always good to have a thin cardigan or poncho/long sari/long shawl to wrap around. It can be warm in the sun, but it becomes cool when you walk into the shadows, if not cold.
Spring Clothing
The Lithuanians tend to experience late spring, meaning they still have snow in March. Some of the snow melts quickly, some slowly, but the streets are expected to be filled with running water. Wear waterproof shoes (for extra warmth, they may be lined with fur) or sprayed with waterproof spray.
Autumn Clothing
Fall is a time to wear coats, elegant knee-high boots, shawls, and wraps. Being practical, Lithuanians tend to wear bright colors or white clothes. The traditional patterns of checked, grey, black, or brown can be improved with accessories.
Winter Clothing
