Farang In Lao

Anyone who has been to either Thailand or Laos will have heard the word farang. The term comes from when the French first arrived in the region, and local people heard them say Francais, which became farang.

There is debate about whether this is an offensive term, the same way people in Europe question if it's ok to say 'foreigner.' If you hear the phrase 'farang kee nok' or 'bird poop westerner,' you've annoyed a local person.

Lao's Diplomatic Relations

Historically, the most important foreign country to Laos was France. They effectively controlled the country from 1887-1945.

The French encouraged the formation of Laos, then split into different kingdoms and ethnic groups (the most famous being in Luang Prabang) to try and unite the ethnic Lao and sour Thai Lao relations.

Laos was as important to the French as its Vietnamese neighbor. As we discussed in an article on why they were was no Lao on DuoLingo. The population density of Vietnam was much higher, and it had a coastline, unlike Laos, which was the only landlocked country in the region. (The Lao population is still low at 7.276 million).

What was seen as a more prized asset was Thailand(then Siam) by both the French and the British. Both countries had plans to take it over, but ultimately it wasn't deemed worth the risk of starting a full-scale war.

Surprisingly relations between France and Laos are still good. France is the leading Western investor in Laos, including firms like: (EDF, Essilor, BRED-Banque Populaire, Bureau Veritas).

However, this pales in comparison with China that has projects worth $12 billion.

No doubt, this has to do with the fact that both countries have the same political system. The Chinese Communists were instrumental in winning the Vietnamese war(that had spilled over into Laos) and securing power for the Pathet Lao in 1975.

Also, China currently ranks number 1 in the world in foreign investment with a total number of $153.71 billion, a year on year increase of 12.3%
