Natural Disasters In Georgia

Georgia is located in a seismically active area, which means it is an earthquake-prone area. The most recent large earthquake was a 6.2 magnitude earthquake that hit 104 kilometers southwest of Tbilisi in February 2022.

During the summer, lightning and wildfires pose a significant threat, particularly in Georgia’s mountainous regions. Also, two seasons are hazardous for debris flows and landslides: spring, when the snow melts and the rivers overflow as the temperature rises, and fall, when the rainy season begins. During these two periods, many rural settlements are dramatically affected by landslides and debris flows.

The avalanches were triggered by an unusual snowfall that lasted 46 days and was 16 meters thick in certain areas. Between January 9 and January 31, 1987, 330 avalanches were recorded. Mountain communities were severely impacted by Ushguli, Chubri, Kala, Mulakhi, Khaishi, and Mulkahik. Zhamushi village was utterly blanketed in snow, and 26 people were killed. 105 people were killed in the disaster. Over 2,000 homes were destroyed, and around 8,500 people were encouraged to relocate. The overall cost of damages was estimated to reach approximately $300 million.
